Let’s go through some excuses that we have all been guilty of using one time or another:

  • It’s too early in the day. The bed is really warm, it’s raining and I don’t feel like going out into the freezing cold.

  • I’m not going to cycle to work. By the time I arrive, I’ll be a sweaty mess and it will ruin my whole day.

  • I’ve had a long day at work. I’m too tired to go to the gym now.

  • I’m in a bad mood. I deserve a cheat meal.

  • I have a lot of things to do at home. I can’t afford to exercise for an hour.

How to Keep Motivated:

Break the Goal down

If you want to lose 20 kg, it is a daunting target to have and one that will be achieved very slowly and with difficulty. Split that up and set your smaller target to losing 1 kg per week. 1 kg is an achievable goal that will help you get to the final target.

Get a Buddy

Do not do it alone. Get your loved ones to join in, or maybe a friend or colleague. There’s strength in numbers; when you feel like giving up someone will stop you from replacing your running shoes with bedroom slippers and a bowl of popcorn.

Keep Track

Print out a huge calendar and stick it to the wall. Every day when you don’t work out, mark it with a red X, making it clearly visible. Having a long list of Xs might urge you to get out of bed and do something.

Update your Music

Make sure you’re updating your playlist weekly. There’s nothing worse than listening to the same couple of songs for months. Is there a new album you’ve been looking forward to listening to? Leave it for your workout.

Change Clothes

Don’t you love it when you have a new pair of trainers, or a new t-shirt you want to proudly wear as you jog around the neighbourhood? Wearing the same outfit day in and day out can lead to things becoming boring very quickly. Something new to wear makes getting out of bed more worth the while.

Keep it Exciting

Keep an open mind about potential activities you can try. Do not stick to only traditional sports activities like football and tennis. Try something more exciting like canoeing or synchronised swimming. Don’t worry if you think you’re not any good at it. The important thing is to have fun and to burn those extra calories.
